Rotating Shifts
The Senior / Healthcare Assistant will support Registered Nurses (RNs) and Enrolled Nurses (ENs) in delivering basic patient care in inpatient areas, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for patients and their families.
1. General Hygiene & Patient Care
- Attend to patients’ call bells and daily needs
- Assist with elimination needs (e.g., application of urosheath)
- Apply anti-embolism stockings
- Prepare patients for examinations and procedures
- Change bed linen and clothing
- Perform assisted baths and perineal care
- Provide last offices
- Assist with lifting, transferring, positioning, and transporting patients
2. Nutritional Support
- Document patients’ intake and output
- Order and serve meals, assist with oral feeding
- Remove and assist feeding via NGT/PEG
- Perform continuous tube feeding and basic pump handling
3. Admission & Transfer Procedures
- Prepare ward for patient admissions
- Measure height, weight, and baseline vital signs
- Orientate patients to ward environment and policies
- Perform initial assessments
- Set up and handle portable oxygen tanks during transfers
4. Clinical Tests & Vital Signs
- Monitor and record vital signs
- Perform 12-lead ECG
- Conduct capillary blood glucose monitoring
- Collect urine, stool, sputum, MRSA swabs and dispatch specimens
- Safely measure urine from urinary catheter
5. Drug Administration / Therapy
- Administer oxygen therapy
6. Nursing Procedures
- Assist with:
- Application of physical restrainers
- Removal of peripheral venous cannula
- Repositioning of bed-bound patients (2-hourly turns)
- Oral suctioning
- Complex wound dressing and bandaging
- IV cannulation and venepuncture
- Bladder scans
- Initiation of emergency procedures
- Minor surgical procedures with doctors/nurses
7. Patient-Facing Tasks
- Manage visitor access in the ward
- Educate patients and families on infection control practices
- Coordinate discharges, appointments, and follow-ups
- Manage calls and liaise between wards, departments, and next-of-kin
8. Bed & Medical Record Management
- Perform patient headcount audits
- Manage patient transfers and update ward movements
- Request and file medical records, X-rays, and case notes
9. Inventory & Equipment
- Conduct inventory counts and asset tracking
- Top up ward supplies
- Perform monthly fire safety checks
10. Service Excellence & Quality
- Engage patients and families during ward orientation
- Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) projects
11. Clerical Support
- Handle incoming/outgoing mail and coordinate porters
- Conduct simple case discharges and manage patient property
- Perform daily ward rounds to update patient boards and systems
12. Portering & Transport
- Transport patients for urgent procedures
- Porter urgent wheelchair cases
- Dispatch and collect items in urgent situations
13. Housekeeping & Safety
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized ward environment
- Ensure proper waste disposal and handle spillages appropriately
Requirements:
• Minimum NITEC / Higher NITEC and equivalent
